Why do my boogers smell like cigarettes ash?

I have had a fever and a cold. Whenever I sniff I smell the stench of cigarettes ash -- and I don't even smoke. I was never around smokers or anything within the few weeks. Now I smell it in my mouth and I have to keep brushing my teeth and drinking liquids to try and get rid of it. I know the smell is coming from my nose, so I tried to blow my nose several times. It wouldn't work because it's very dry and nothing comes out but that nasty smell. What can it be? I have a fever. Can that be the source? Could it be something I ate? Please give any suggestions.
