Is SAE 10 W 30 Non detergent?

W-D 40 has been used to wipe down gun barrels since it was invented with no bad effects such as a "thick yellow goo" It will prevent the gun from rusting as it sits up .It is not a great lubricant because it does not last very long in the shooting mechanism of a gun.But as a rust deterrent it works fine. And the gentleman you mentioned may have a sponsor that makes a product to wipe down guns with.Therefore the put down on WD-40. The oil you mentioned will attract dust like crazy that will stick on your gun barrel. It was designed to be a lubricant in an automobile engine. Go with the W-D 40 if it is available to you.
